In a thrilling start to the Nepal Premier League (NPL), the Janakpur Bolts secured an emphatic 8-wicket victory over the Biratnagar Kings in their opening match.
Led by a magnificent half-century from Lahiru Milantha and impressive bowling performances from Lalit Rajbanshi, Kishor Mahato, and Harsh Thaker, Janakpur chased down Biratnagar’s modest target of 128 with ease, reaching 131 for 2 in just 15.3 overs.
Milantha was the star of the show, remaining unbeaten on 75 off 53 balls with nine fours and three sixes. His partner, Harsh Thaker, contributed a valuable 29 not out off 33 balls, including two boundaries. Thaker hit the winning four to seal the victory.
Janakpur got off to a flying start, scoring 11 runs off the first over thanks to a wide from Chris Sole. However, Sole struck back, dismissing Aasif Sheikh to give Biratnagar their first breakthrough. Captain Anil Shah also departed early, caught by Pratis GC, leaving Janakpur reeling at 15 for 2.
But Milantha and Thaker steadied the ship with a century partnership for the third wicket. Their unbeaten stand ensured a comfortable victory for Janakpur.
Biratnagar was put into bat and posted 127 runs in 19 overs. Martin Guptill was the only batsman to offer any resistance, scoring a half-century. However, none of the other batsmen could provide significant support.
Guptill, playing his first franchise league in Nepal, hit seven fours and a six in his knock of 50 off 43 balls. He became the first player to score a half-century and hit a six in the NPL.
Lokesh Bam had earlier hit the first four of the tournament but was dismissed by Lalit Rajbanshi, who claimed the first wicket of the NPL.
For Janakpur, Lalit Rajbanshi was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 3 for 28. Canadian all-rounder Harsh Thaker also impressed with 2 for 22.
