From Congress to Madhesi Movement: Mahantha Thakur’s Political Legacy

Mahantha Thakur, born on February 22, 1941, in Godaita, Sarlahi, Nepal, is a prominent Nepalese politician known for his significant contributions to the country’s political landscape. He began his political journey with the Nepali Congress Party, where he served as treasurer and held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Science and Technology.

Thakur’s political activism commenced during his student years in 2016 BS (1959-1960 AD), leading to his arrest while protesting against King Mahendra’s coup d’état. He became the president of the Students’ Union affiliated with the Nepali Congress in 2026 BS (1969-1970 AD) and was a founding central member of the Nepal Students Association.

In 1991, Thakur was elected from Sarlahi and appointed Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, marking a significant milestone in his political career. He continued to serve in various capacities within the Nepali Congress until 2006 when he left the party to focus on Madhesi politics.

Thakur played a pivotal role in advocating for the rights of the Madhesi people, leading to the formation of the Terai Madhesh Loktantrik Party (TMLP) in 2006, where he served as president. Under his leadership, the TMLP became a significant force in Nepalese politics, championing the causes of the Madhesi community.

In 2021, following a split in the People’s Socialist Party, Nepal (PSP-N), Thakur founded the Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, Nepal, and assumed the role of president. This move underscored his enduring influence and commitment to representing the interests of the Madhesi people.

Throughout his career, Thakur has been recognized for his integrity and political morality, maintaining a reputation free from major controversies. His dedication to public service and advocacy for marginalized communities have solidified his status as a respected figure in Nepalese politics.

On a personal note, Thakur faced significant hardships, including the loss of his wife due to a tragic accident and the death of his son, a medical student, in an accident. He currently resides in Kathmandu with his daughter.

Mahantha Thakur’s journey reflects his unwavering commitment to democracy, social justice, and the upliftment of marginalized communities in Nepal. His leadership continues to inspire many in the country’s political sphere.
